Everyday life brings us occasions to be exposed to new challenges. We can let them upset us, or we can take them as games following the wonderful advice from Florence Scovel Shinn in “The Game Of Life And How To Play It”.
I shall tell you how this book transformed my life and why I bought so many of these books to offer as gifts to my friends and clients in another article.
A month ago, I lost access to the email system that I use to communicate with you. I had to create a new account with a different company and transfer all my contacts, design new forms and create new lists.
It showed me how dependable a business can be on external software and its automation.
After being ready to be used, I recovered access to the initial email system. Now I have more choices and will decide on which one to keep.
In the process, I had a chance to experience frustration and loss of time and energy, but also to realize how vulnerable communication can be. We depend so much on the internet, computers, and software.
Of course, there are different scales in the challenges that we are facing and for me, emotional challenges are the ones that affect me the most.
Such as emotional events that trigger negative feelings like rejection, guilt, lack of love, abandonment issues, etc.
When those emotional triggers are happening, I can lose perspective easily. The impact of the hurtful feelings becomes irrational and out of proportion.
The #1 Tip for me is to take a distance and try my best not to respond to the situation too fast.
Leaving time for both the brain and the heart to process and realize that the other involved person's reaction was probably also triggered by past emotional baggage.
Without such distance, I would overreact negatively causing the situation to amplify, not resolve.
Because I am by nature a non-judgmental and forgiving person, with time I can let go of my feeling and analyses what I could have done or say differently.
Once the root cause awareness is revealed, I forgive myself for my mistakes, apologize when possible or at least take responsibility for the situation without blame, guilt, or resentment.
I am inviting you to recall, right now one situation that triggered you in a negative way.
Notice where you can feel discomfort in your body, scale the intensity from 1 to 10, then take a deep breath and let it go through you without trying to auto-analyze it or control it.
Keep breathing slowly, and “let go, let God” do the work.
